We pleased to confirm that, in partnership with SLC Property, planning permission has been obtained for a change of use at Wivenhoe Station House in Colchester to create a new “Library of Things” initiative, as part of the Community Rail Network.

A Library of Things is a community-focused initiative that enables individuals to borrow everyday items, such as kitchen appliances, gardening equipment, camping gear, and DIY tools,  rather than purchasing them outright. Operating in a similar way to a traditional library, the scheme provides access to practical items that are often only needed occasionally or seasonally.

The initiative aims to reduce unnecessary consumption and waste by encouraging people to share the ownership.

In addition to promoting sustainability and supporting a circular economy, the Library of Things model helps strengthen community connections and reduce the environmental impact associated with overconsumption.

The project also represents a positive repurposing of a former station building, transforming underused space into a valuable community asset that will directly benefit local people.

The principles behind the initiative closely align with our commitment to community benefit and sustainability. We hope the success of the Wivenhoe Station House project will encourage similar schemes to be adopted by communities across the country.
