Glamorgan Building

  • Location: Cardiff University, Wales

We were commissioned by Dalkia Energy, on behalf of Cardiff University, to support the University’s commitment to becoming net zero. Several Investment Grade Audits (IGA) were produced to identify a comprehensive list of energy conservation measures to deliver significant energy costs and carbon savings. The measures include, but are not limited to, lighting retrofits, installation of solar panels, air handling unit fan and filter retrofits and refurbishments, building management optimization, fume cupboard optimization and valve and pipework insulation.

Whilst many of the works proposed do not require planning permission, a temporary site compound was required to facilitate the works, including site offices, storage containers and waste recycling tips. EP obtained planning permission for a temporary site compound on an existing university car park in July 2024. The use of the site as a compound was granted for a period of two years to accommodate for the anticipated duration for the works. The compound is located within Cathays Park Conservation Area and is adjacent to two listed buildings. An assessment of the possible impact on heritage assets was therefore undertaken, as well as an assessment of the impact of the temporary removal of a car park, and possible impact on residential amenity against the relevant Welsh planning policies.
