At Ethical Planning we’re always looking for ways to give back to the community and recently, we had the privilege of spending a day volunteering at The People’s Kitchen in Newcastle, an incredible organisation that provides meals, comfort, and compassion to those who need it most.
The People’s Kitchen prepares and serves over 300 hot meals every single day, operating entirely through the generosity of donations and volunteers. Their mission goes beyond just food – they aim to provide friendship, support, and a sense of belonging to anyone experiencing hardship or homelessness.
A Proud History of Kindness
The People’s Kitchen was founded in 1985 by Alison Kay, a compassionate local woman who was moved to act after hearing about the tragic death of a homeless man in Leazes Park. Her simple yet powerful belief “If you care, you can help”, became the driving force behind the organisation.
What started with offering tea and sandwiches under the railway arches quickly grew. Alison gathered a team of volunteers and, in time, opened the first indoor canteen. Today, The People’s Kitchen continues her legacy, supporting the vulnerable not just with meals, but also with clothing, toiletries, and a deep sense of community and dignity.
A Day of Perspective
Behind this vital work is a team of dedicated volunteers who give their time, energy, and hearts every day. With 10+ volunteers on site every morning and evening, they work tirelessly cooking, cleaning, serving, and offering kindness with every plate. All of them committing to a weekly shift all year round, providing continuity and care to those they serve.
We were truly honoured to be welcomed into their space. Our team was able to see first-hand the level of organisation, effort, and compassion that goes into every shift. It was both humbling and inspiring to witness their work and to be part of it, even for just a day.
A huge thank you to The People’s Kitchen for allowing us to be part of your incredible community. We left with a deep appreciation for the vital role you play in Newcastle, and we encourage others to support this remarkable organisation, whether by volunteering, donating, or simply spreading the word.
